Ask Dr. Dirt: Mid-Drive vs. Hub-Drive eBikes?

Question: Can you tell me the difference between Mid drive vs. Hub drive ebikes? – Ashton, Eagle, CO

Answer: Both mid-drive and hub-drive motor systems offer electric assistance, but they differ significantly in performance, cost, and riding experience.

Mid-drive motors are located at the bike’s crankset, directly driving the pedals and using the bike’s gears. This setup offers excellent efficiency and performance, especially on hills or rough terrain. Because the motor works with the drivetrain, it can deliver more torque and a natural riding feel. Mid-drives also have better weight distribution, making them ideal for off-road or performance-oriented riding. However, they tend to be more expensive and can wear down the drivetrain components faster due to the added strain.

Hub-drive motors, on the other hand, are mounted in the wheel hub, usually the rear. They operate independently of the bike’s gears and directly spin the wheel. Hub drives are generally quieter, more affordable, and require less maintenance, making them great for city commuting or casual riding on flat terrain. Many models include a throttle option for pedal-free riding, which is often not available on mid-drive bikes.

In short, mid-drive e-bikes are better for riders tackling steep hills, long distances, or technical terrain. Hub drives are perfect for urban commuters or beginners who want a simple, cost-effective way to ride. The choice depends on where you ride, how much assistance you want, and your budget.

All the ebikes we test, evaluate and work on are the mid-drive type of motor systems. Hub-drive motor systems have great power but they have poor weight distribution which neagatively affects any type of spirited trail riding.
