Problem
How to effectively charge multiple Lithium Ion e-bike batteries when there is no AC power supply. This customer needed their folding solar charging system optimized for daily Li-ion pack charging in full off-the-grid conditions.
Solution
Dirt Revolution’s engineering team brought the necessary expertise and testing methods while the Utah summer sun provided the rest. DR’s team tested a device that instantaneously charged up to two Li-ion back pack style batteries while supporting plug-and-play operation. The system consisted of a lightweight custom folding solar panel array, with efficient monocrystalline photovoltaics, and an intelligent power processing module.
The panel contained transparent polymer-encapsulated series-connected solar cell packs with anti parallel diodes, allowing partial shading operation. The power processing module consists of a digital signal processor, and a micro-controller, supporting both maximum power point tracking of the solar panel with partial shading detection and multi-mode charging of Li-ion packs.
Power | Use | Application Notes |
200W | Off-The-Grid | An effective folding charging system for e-bike Li-ion battery packs. |
Outcome
System implementation stages and underlying issues were thoroughly discussed, and utilized hardware components were presented to client in detail. Experimental results of system testing under real outdoor conditions were presented to demonstrate the device functionality and yield capabilities.
