Ask Dr. Dirt: Shimano E-Tube App?

Question: What’s this Shimano E-Tube app everyone is talking about? – Vance, Prescott AZ

Answer: The Shimano E-Tube app is a mobile platform for managing and customizing Shimano electronic cycling systems, including Di2 electronic shifting and STEPS e-bike components. By connecting a smartphone or tablet to a compatible bike via Bluetooth, riders can fine-tune performance settings, update firmware, and monitor ride data.

Shimano offers two separate apps within the E-Tube ecosystem:

1. E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist (Customization & Maintenance)

This is the main app for configuring and maintaining Shimano electronic systems.

  • Customization: Remap shifter buttons, adjust shift speed, and configure Synchro Shift settings.
  • E-bike tuning: Modify assist levels, torque response, and acceleration characteristics for Shimano STEPS motors.
  • Firmware updates: Wirelessly install the latest software updates for compatible components.
  • Diagnostics: Detect and troubleshoot system errors or connectivity issues.

2. E-TUBE RIDE (Ride Dashboard)

This app functions as a digital cycling dashboard during rides.

  • Live ride data: Displays speed, gear position, battery status, and assist mode in real time.
  • Navigation: Offers GPS-based routing and map guidance.
  • Ride tracking: Records ride statistics and syncs data with SHIMANO CONNECT Lab or Strava.

Compatibility Requirements

To use these apps, the bike must include a wireless-compatible component, such as the EW-WU111 “D-Fly” module for older 11-speed Di2 systems, or built-in wireless support found in newer 12-speed Di2 and STEPS systems.
